I don't understand the differences, it's 2.3...but it's called a quad4? Can someone explain to me the difference between the two? Quad4 and regular 2.4l?

technically a 2.4 is a twin cam, but based of the quad 4. the tc has a longer stroke, but smaller bore iirc. they also have balance shafts, where as the quad 4 doesnt. im sure somebody can explain better then i can

Quad 4 means "quad valve, 4 cylinder." referring of course to its 4 valve per cylinder configuration. like kag said, the 2.3 and 2.4 are both Quad 4 engines, GM just changed the name on the 2.4 into "TwinCam" because by that time the quad 4 had such a bad reputation nobody wanted ot buy it.

I think a good example would be the how theres the 2.2 and the 2200 (i think lol)

But they're not exactly the same tho right? I couldn't buy a Quad4 valve cover for a 2.4 twin cam and have it be legit right?

most things will swap between the two motors.

oh no, im not asking if it'll fit, im asking if it would be...posing? Like i wouldn't put Z24 emblems and such and try and pass my 2.2 off as a z24, so are the 2.4 and quad4 similiar enough for me to put a quad4 cover on a 2.4, or is the 2.4 not "high output" like the quad4?

ok. Well there are a few different quad 4s. There is the 2.3L LO (LD2) 150hp quad 4, then there is the 180hp 2.3L quad 4 HO (LGO), also there is the rare 2.3L W41 (W41) that makes 190hp. And finally there is the 150hp 2.4L Twin Cam (LD9)

Personally i think its rice, when people put the HO IDI cover on the twin cam. Would be like putting the HO cover on the LO version.

yeah thats what i was saying, i wouldnt want to be looked down on for doing it, how can i get my hands on a quad4 engine tho? did they come stock in cavaliers or do you have to order them? where did they come from originally?

The 2.3L LO (LD2) came in the 1995 Z24. And the 2.4L twin cam (LD9) came in the 96-02 Z24.

aha, so lastly which would you think is the better motor?

don't put a "high output" cover or "w41" cover on your 2.4L, because it's not either of those. that is rice. but getting a regular 16v Quad 4 DOHC cover isn't rice... cause that's what it is. a 16 valve dual overhead cam quad 4...

it depends what year model cavalier you ahve and if you have emissions where u live that use computer diagnostics to test OBDII cars.

i would recommend the HO quad 4, but if you have a 1996+ and they scan your computer with a scantool at the emissions place, your not going to pass emissions. if emissions are a problem, a 2.4L, getrag or isuzu trans, and ECM/harness swap is your best option.
