I've heard alot about different coatings on the pistons and cylinder walls that can help the motor deal with excessive heat and pressure. What is there out there?

heres some questions off the top of my head...
How much is it to get pistons ceramic coated
what advantages are there
what coatings can there be added the cylinder walls?
come on now...

Pistons (Ceramic - Dome / MOS2 - Skirt) TBC / MOS2 $30 ea.
Combustion Chambers TBC $200
Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC)
Designed to reduce movement of heat by building a thermal resistant barrier. These are great for heaters, turbo components, and manifolds.A good example of use internally would be within a combustion chamber. Here you want to utilize the heat to push down on the piston rather then radiate to the surounding surfaces.

you NEVER want to coat cylinder walls with anything.. bad bad news. Coat the pistons with teflon, like the LS6 or Moly

Now heres something for ya. My father has drawn up some pistons on cad using the stockers. If we shave the top to lower compression, (these will be billet), use some great material, and teflon coat them..... What do you guys think.

considering how important pistons are, the labor involved in creating your own vs ordering some from ross or something to me shows its easier to just buy them and have piece of mind it will be good stuff.

labor?
the cnc does that....
1. Billet pistons are stronger than forged
2. Were talking about shaving thousanths off the top (due to the large surface area)
3. When you look at the $80 it'll cost me(at the most) vs. the $400 for the cheapest forged ones around.
and besides, I'm cloud talking right now, it may or may not happen.

I think billet would really thow off the counterbalance. Billet is stronger, but its also heavier.

Now if he could do a billet crank.. :D

What would that be worth to you?
I happen to have a hook up in the high performance crank industry...
Shaving .020" off the top of pistons is actually not an uncommon practice....

man billet cranks are expensive though...
I wonder how much of a deal he would give me...

Check out Swain Tech Coatings www.swaintech.com A lot of people racing use their coatings with good results. They also did the coatings on the Fueling Quad 4's the set the land speed records back in '89 and '90.
